Law of Nines

I am very, very excited to get my fantasy cast for The Law of Nines finally completed. The Law of Nines is a modern-fantasy novel by Terry Goodkind that ties in with the Sword of Truth series. While none of the characters from that series appear in this one, and the two stories are separated by approximately 1,000 years, I promise you, they are related.

Let's start with the main, character, whose name is Alex Rahl. You read that right, Rahl. Interesting, yes? OK, if you haven't read any of the Sword of Truth books, then that name might not mean a lot to you, but I promise you; it's important. Alex is a struggling artist living in Orden, Nebraska (see... Orden? Oh, go read the books already!). He's turning 27, and this age is actually very important to the overall storyline. He is a Rahl, so he's a big strong, guy with an underlying temper. However, he comes across as an easy-going, Joe Schmoe type, seeing as he's a painter that lives in his parents house. He has the "Rahl eyes"; meaning blue or gray piercing eyes, and when you talk about eyes like that, one man, and one man only comes to mind: Jake Gyllenhaal.

And, lest you doubt his ability to bulk up and look like a Rahl man should:

Yowza. Honestly, who knew Bubbleboy would grow up to be the Prince of Persia?

Next up, we have Bethany, a crazy girlfriend of Alex's. She's blond and beautiful and a little quick to want to consummate their relationship. We learn very quickly that she is actually Queen Bethany and has quite an agenda up her... well, she wouldn't have sleeves, but she certainly has it someplace. Truthfully, one woman came to mind, and that is Clare Kramer.

Jax is a mysterious, beautiful woman who is looking for a "different kind of human" and follows Alex around rather protectively. Or threateningly, depending on the situation. She's tall, strong, and regal. She's also pretty handy with a knife, and she's got a good head on her shoulders. I like somebody like Rachel Nichols.

Helen Rahl is Alex's mother, but the only time we really see her is after she's been placed in a mental institution. She's not terribly old, but life has been hard; she had a mental breakdown at the age of 27 and spent the past 25 years of her life running from her demons. Karen Allen, I think, would be an excellent choice. This part isn't big, per se, but it's heavy. And honestly, look at this woman:

Can you believe she is 59? She looks just as adorable as she did in Raiders of the Lost Ark!

Benjamin Rahl is Alex's grandfather, a wise, loving man who is trying to prepare Alex for what is coming. He's not around a whole lot, but when he is there, we need compassion and love and concern in addition to the spark of righteous anger that comes with every man born to the Rahl name.  I pictured Cliff Robertson.

Sedrick Vendis is our big, bad villain. Yet, I don't get the sense that he's the same type of villain that we generally see; I feel like he's more of a don, running the show without getting his hands dirty. So I never pictured him as being all that big; more of a slimy character than anything. Somebody kind of like Gregg Henry, standing there is a pristine Gucci suit while everyone around him drips with blood.
