Middle and Southern Ireland was the Jesuit Order’s great military fortress by which Rome sought to crush the Protestant Reformation in England. Northern Ireland had been settled by Scottish and English Protestants who rightly owned their land. But in 1641 the Jesuits launched their infamous Irish Massacre that would span eight years, killing 300,000 Protestants, until Cromwell invaded the island in 1649 to put an end to the mass-murder.
