Andreikin takes early Capablanca Memorial lead

2009 SPICE Cup co-champion GM Dmitry Andreikin is taking an early lead at the Capablanca Memorial by defeating Cuba's #2 player, GM Bruzon. The other two games were drawn.

Vietnam star to play commemoration chess in Cuba

QÐND - Monday, May 02, 2011, 22:24 Vietnamese grandmaster Le Quang Liem, 20, will take part in a chess tournament in Havana city from May 10-21 to commemorate the late chess legend Jose Raul Capablanca of Cuba.

Liem, who is invited to the event as the champion of the 2011 Aeroflot Open chess tournament, will compete against five other elite players including Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk, the world’s number 5; David Navara (Czech, world’s number 22), and Dmitry Andreikin (Russia, world’s number 49).

Cuban organizers will cover all costs of food, accommodation and transport in the nation for participant players.

After the event, Liem will leave Cuba for France to play for Evry Grand Roque in May.

He had played for clubs in Germany and China in the first half this year.

Dominguez sets national record

Cuban Chess Player Sets National Record and Ranks World’s 21st

HAVANA, Cuba, May 1 (acn) Cuban Grand Master Leinier Dominguez set a new national record when the World Chess Federation (FIDE) published its latest update showing him with 2,726 ELO points, in the world’s 21st position.

The FIDE official website has the Cuban GM with 10 more ELO points than two months ago, which helped him climb the same amount of positions in the world ranking, to lead Latin America and place third in the Americas.

This earning was made by winning the Zonal 2.3 tournament, and now Dominguez has 5 more points than his best ever, achieved in April 2009. According to chess specialists this new mark is even better than what they calculate Cuban late world champion (1921-27) Jose Raul Capablanca ever had (2,725) though he played before this performance calculating system was implemented.

Another Cuban who moved up the ranking was Lazaro Bruzon, now in the 45th position with 2,693 ELO, despite FIDE not computing his earnings in the just concluded continental championship, which he won.

Bruzon is expected to enter soon the privileged 2,700 and above ELO group, keeping up with his steady progression from the world’s 75th to the current one.

The FIDE lists is led by Indian GM Viswanathan Anand (2 817), Norwegian Magnus Carlsen (2 815), and Armenian Levon Aronian (2 808). Despite there are no Russian GMs among the top-3, that country leads the list among nations.

Cuba, with this latest update, moved up 3 positions to the 19th, following the US in the Americas.
