Caruana wins Italian Championship, GM norm for D'Amore

Fabiano Caruana Campioned d'Italia 2010!

Con 9 punti su 11, battendo all'ultimo turno Denis Rombaldoni Fabiano Caruana conquista il titolo di Campione Italiano 2010.

After a slow start, Caruana caught fire and ran away with the 2010 Italian Championship. IM Carlo D’Amore (46 years old) finished 2nd and earned a GM norm. He is a psychiatric doctor and lives in Roma. Photo provided by Adolivio.

Caruana wins Italian Championship

Fabiano Caruana has clinched at least a tie for first at the 2010 Italian Championship going into the final round. Carlo D'Amore and Carlos Garcia Palermo are a full point behind as they are the last two still with mathematical chances to catch Fabiano.

Italian Championship update by Adolivio

After 8 rounds, GM Caruana succeeded in catching the leaders at the 70th Italian Championship, held in Siena, the nice and historical town of Tuscany.

Today Caruana won while GM Garcia-Palermo and IM Denis Rombaldoni (both with black) made draw, so these three players now are leading with 6 points. Fourth with 5 points is IM D’Amore.

The 12 players, round robin Italian Championship will end on Dec 4th.

Special recognition during Italian Championship

During the Italian championship, a few special events took place:

a) The prize giving to the journalist of non technical media authors of the best articles about chess in 2009 – this prize is dedicated to IM Alvise Zichichi (1938-2003), and also former president of Italian Federation.

b) The prize giving of “Premio Siena Scacchi” to a personality of Siena.
