Reggio Emilia round 3 report

Reggio Emilia round 3 report

Thursday December 30th 2010

The match Caruana against Short is already becoming a classic in tournaments , we can remember the dramatic game in corus B 2009 that qualified Fabiano to play the A on 2010. Will Fabiano know how to stop the “on fire” GM. The opening seem a quiet French-tarrash
variation and around move 21 the game become very alive with an f5 played by black that seem to weaken the kingside but opens the position and after some exchanges Fabiano enters in a queen endgame with an advantage and was able to collect the whole point.

Movsesisan –Godena is a theoric encounter in Michele “ pet line” . The Armenian GM ( from today he returns to represent Armenia) at move 15 decided to change and went for Na3 instead of 15. Qg3. It was a very complicated game but during the time pressure many pieces were exchange and at the end Godena was a pawn up but it seems it was not enough advantage to win.

Paco is inspired ! In the opening his queen takes the b7 pawn that seems a bit poison, but with an exchange sacrifice his keeps the possibility to attack and finally has the chance to play 27.Rxg7 that forces Navara into a very inferior endgame. In analisis room both players gave great commentaries. And now he leads with 2.5 out of 3

Onischuk and Ivanchuk made a draw. The American GM seem to have an advantage but it was not sufficient to win, but in the postmortem there was an interesting move Rc1 instead of c5.

Morozevich-Gashimov was a very long battle, seem during the game Morozevich had an slight advantage but it was a very close position but after five long hours playing the scenary changes a bit and now it seems Gashimov stands slightly better but maybe not enough to win. And draw was agreed after six hours of combativity.

Reggio Emilia round 2 report

Wednesday 29th December 2010

Second round.

First game to end was Ivanchuk - Vallejo Pons, few moves but very intense. With white Vassily choose a strange setup, placing the Bishop on e2 and combining it with g3. This system gave Black the possibility to sacrifice a piece for two pawns and an exchange.

May be Vassily overlooked that after 10.Nxe4 (instead of 10.f3) dxe4 11.Nxg6 hxg6 12.f3 the hidden 12…Rxh2. The Ukrainian was not convinced of his position and offered draw, and the spanish GM accepted. The analisys didin’t prove who was better. Paco seems satisfied, after yesterday having some fortune and today draw with black against the top seeded. Who knows if this is his tournament?

Today Michele Godena seem calm but inside him he still felt anger for losing yesterday. After a solid opening with a slight advantage for White in a typical Scotch positions were the Italian player seems to understand well even with the Zeitnot. The knight ending looks witched: there is no win!

Also today Short gave us a brilliant game against the “rested” Morozevich, heterogenic castles are the sign of a great fight. In this game we could see again Nigel’s king walking around the board. In the analisys room full of spectators, like in the playing room, there are many
moves suggested but there is not a clear path. at the full point went to the English GM. May be the blunder was 29…d4 better was 29…Rh4. Capablanca said the good player is also lucky. Short, coming in the analysis room said “was a robe”, now he is 2 out of 2!

Gashimov-Movsesian was another dynamic position with equal chances and it finish in a draw.

Fabiano Caruana choose the Lasker Pelikan against Navara. The game was a strategical fight, were both had to played with a lot of carefulness. Fabiano enter in time pressure and the white squares slowly became weaker and weaker and the position finally collapse.

A miracle escape

Nigel Short had a lucky escape on the white side of a wild French Defence against the newly arrived Alexander Morozevich to move to 2/2 half a point clear of the field. Vassily Ivanchuk allowed a quick draw after a new move was convincingly refuted as a way of getting the advantage by Francisco Vallejo Pons. David Navara got a nice positional advantage on the white side of a Sicilian against Fabiano Caruana and brought this home for a win. The remaining games were drawn.

Nigel Short moved into the lead alone on 2/2 after winning a second game in a row, this time against Alexander Morozevich who managed to make it out of snow and ice-bound Russia in time for the game. Morozevich got much the better of it as black when he played the French. He had a decisive advantage on move 28 but just couldn't put Short away. After 33...Nxd3 Short accurately saw his way through the complications to a win. Short has made the most of his luck and the two games with the white pieces at the start of the tournament. For Morozevich we will have to wait and see if he can recover some of his best form. All this traveling can't have done him much good, but there were also question marks about what standard of play he would manage after such a long break.

Back to today: great emotion (great expectations) given us by Alexander Morozevich who was blocked by the snow on the Moscow’s airport and risk his participation. The super Grand Master has done all is possible to do to join, traveling all night by train to St. Petersburg and from there taking a flight to Milan where he arrived in the afternoon. The organization and the players agree to allow Morozevich not to play the first round today (the game will be play on 1st of January 2011 at 4 pm - rest day) special thanks to David Navara, Morozevich’s opponent, who also arrived yesterday very late after a long travel. Due to the high level of players there will be very interesting games from the first round, we should mention the match between living legend Vassily Ivanchuk, highest elo of tournament, and the reigning Italia champion and world known player Fabiano Caruana, the italian star will have white, we will see...

53rd Torneo di Capodanno in Reggio Emilia

53rd Torneo di Capodanno in Reggio Emilia
Vassily Ivanchuk top seeded among ten players

Reggio Emilia is a little town in the center of Italy. Little, but for many reasons very important. For at the end of 1700, here was born the Italian national flag, the "tricolore" - green , white, red.

Moreover, the famous writer and poet Ludovico Ariosto, the author of the epic novel "Orlando Furioso", was born in Reggio Emilia in 1474. Perhaps someone could remember the intro: "Le donne, i cavallier, l’arme, gli amori, le cortesie, le audaci imprese io canto."

At that time the city was property of Este family. Almost all members of this family where fond of chess, especially Isabella, duchess of Mantova, who is said to have hosted in her court many important chess players of the time, in particular from Spain. Leonardo da Vinci was also her guest.

We can say that the chess tradition in Reggio Emilia is older than 5 centuries!

"Torneo di Capodanno" history

The "Torneo di Capodanno" was born in 1958 owing to the enthusiasm of Enrico Paoli (1908-2005), GM honoris causa. The name was chosen due to the fact that it started immediately after Xmas to end in the day of Epifania (Helige Drei Konige is January 6th).

It started thanks to the sponsorship of the local Tourist Office and of the firm "Motori Slanzi Novellara". Winner of the first tournament was Otto Marthaler (Suisse-Switzerland). Among the winners of the following editions are Grandmasters Gyozo Forintos, Mario Bertok, Bruno Parma (2 times), Milan Matulovic, Andrew Soltis, Ludek Pachman and (only) two Italians, Alberto Giustolisi and Sergio Mariotti.

The 19th tournament in 1976/77 had the first guest from USSR, GM Gennadi Kuzmin, who also won the event.

For the 25th edition in 1982/83, the tournament found a new sponsor - the bank "Banco di San Geminiano e San Prospero". In that year the winner was the women world champion Nona Gaprindashvili (USSR, Georgia). Among the winners in the following years we find Lajos Portisch, Ulf Andersson, Zoltan Ribli, Vladimir Tukmakov, Mikhail Gurevich, Jaan Ehlvest and Anatolij Karpov (1990/91).

But the peak was the 34th tournament (December 27 1991 - January 6 1992), when among the players in the main group we had the world champion Garry Kasparov and his predecessor Anatoly Karpov. It was the strongest tournament ever played in Reggio Emilia and the first in the history to reach category XVIII !

Please note that at the time the category 18 was considered to be an "abstract" goal, because it seemed almost impossible to have together all the best players of the planet. This was achieved thanks to the great love for chess of Nicola Palladino - at that time President of the Italian Chess Federation - and obviously of Enrico Paoli, very well known and respected by all the top players, including Kasparov himself.

There was also a B group, with the most eminent Italian players, and a tournament for blind players, an unofficial "braille chess" world championship.

And, last but not least, there was a meeting of all the living world champions. Mikhail Botvinnik, Vassily Smyslov, Mikhail Tal and Boris Spassky joined Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov. Bobby Fischer was the only absent.

The final standing of that magnificent tournament was a surprise: the winner was an "outsider", a 22-years old Indian - his name was Viswanathan Anand! We can say that Anand's wonderful career started from Reggio Emilia! The young Indian was so happy with this victory, that as soon as he was certain to have won, he asked the director of Hotel Astoria to send a fax (at that time there was no Internet or mobile phones!) to his family and a couple of friends and journalists, in which he wrote "I won! I won! I won!", signing simply "Anand".

Kasparov was second with the same points as Boris Gelfand.

Unfortunately, the following year the CEO of the bank changed and the tournament went back to "standard", falling in strength when the "Banco di S. Geminiano" was sold to another group.

But the event went on, we have to note that Rafael Vaganian won twice, in 1992/93 and 1994/95, and now thanks to the local supporters the tournament once again reached the respectable 18th category.
