Sign-In / Pay-up: 9:30 am To 9:55 am, (you must be preregistered)
Start Time: 9:55 am
Round Times: 9:55 am - following rounds - ASAP (including lunch break)

* You must Pre-Register
* No half point byes
* WE DO NOT PROCESS ON-SITE USCF MEMBERSHIP
* All games will be played without rule 14H (Insufficient Losing Chances Claims)
* No Smoking
* No Computers
* Turn off all cell phones (or set to vibrate, and answered outside)

This is a rated/sanctioned tournament and you must belong to the United States Chess Federation (USCF) to participate. USCF Membership is available on-line at www.uschess.org.
ALL PBCC EVENTS are by Pre-Tournament Notification only. You must contact us (Email or Phone) by 7:00 p.m. the day BEFORE the tournament starts and give us your name and USCF ID# so we may verify your USCF membership and rating. Then, if you are not present at pairing time for round one, you will simply NOT be entered or paired.

No money changes hands before tournament day.

We DO NOT process on-site uscf memberships at tournaments. You must join or renew before tournament day. If you would like help joining or have questions about USCF membership, please contact us.

Laredo chess champ brings the game home

A former state chess champion is doing his part to bring the game to people in his community.

At Tuesday's Kiwanis club Joel Sauceda talked about the game of chess and how it can benefit more than just students.

Sauceda works as a pharmacist in Laredo, but has spent much of his life playing chess.

A graduate of Cigarroa High School he became the youngest state chess champion ever from Laredo.

This weekend he has organized a chess tournament on April 16th and 17th.

The Laredo open has a $45 entry fee and has several divisions open to the public.

Law day chess tournament

Annual Law Day Chess Tournament Coming

EL PASO – Young students in the borderland who play chess will get the chance to go up against the very best.

On Saturday, April 23, students in grades one through eight are invited to participate in the Annual Law Day Chess Tournament, where they will compete against lawyers and paralegals representing the El Paso Bar Association.

The tournament will take place at Saint Clement's Episcopal Church, on 810 N. Campbell Street, from 8:00 a.m. until about 1:00 p.m. There is no entry fee.

Texas Tech and the Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence invite K-12 students to take part in the first ever historic UIL (University Interscholastic League) Invitational in Chess Puzzle Solving on Jan. 22 at the Science Spectrum.

There will be four grade sections:

K-3
4-5
6-8
9-12

Entry fee is only $5!

Onsite registration: 11:30 am-12:15 pm; Competition: 12:30 pm-1:00 pm.

There will be awesome chess prizes for the winners in each section!

Historic chess initiative in Texas

Texas Tech University and SPICE officially launched the UIL Chess Puzzle Solving Statewide Pilot in the state of Texas earlier today at Wester Elementary School in Lubbock, Texas. UIL is the largest interschool organization of its kind in the world!

More than 300 students, teachers, parents, administrators, and various media, etc. were on hand for the launching of this historic competition.

This will potentially provide excellent opportunities for millions of chess playing students in the entire state of Texas to compete and earn scholarships for years to come. This is the first time that Chess has been accepted as an UIL Competition in its 101 year history!

"The seeds of the UIL were planted in 1904, when Dr. S.E. Mezes, president of UT, decided the state's foremost university needed to be of service to the entire state.... Since 1910, the records and achievements of state high school participants have justified the decision of the University to support this program of public school service. The UIL has grown into the largest interschool organization of its kind in the world, and is the envy of similar groups nationwide. The UIL exists to provide educational extracurricular academic, athletic, and music contests. So successful is the program that one of every two high school seniors has participated in a UIL event prior to graduation. Texas Tech, SPICE Introduces Old Game to Young Players

WHAT: Texas Tech University announces a state pilot program for students of Lubbock Independent School District.

WHEN: 1 p.m. Monday (Dec. 13)

WHERE: Wester Elementary, 4602 Chicago Ave.

EVENT: Chess will be the subject of a University Interscholastic League (UIL) competition next year for elementary and middle school students. The pilot program was proposed by the Texas Tech Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence (SPICE), part of the Division of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement.

The competition will be in the format of solving chess puzzles designed by Grandmaster Polgar. Competing students in grades two through eight will have 20 puzzles to solve in 30 minutes.

Elementary school students will choose their answers from mostly multiple choice questions in which white can checkmate black in one move, while older students will have puzzles that are checkmates in one or two moves.

According to Lynn Elms, the regional director for UIL, the pilot chess program is a historic moment for Texas Tech, which has a 75-year association with UIL. This is the first competition that Texas Tech has proposed.

WHAT: USCF-rated 5-round Swiss in 7 sections: Kinder/1st (K-1) ; Primary (K-3)Championship & JV under 400 ; Elementary (4-5)Championship & JV under 600 ; Middle (6-8) Championship ; High School (9-12)Championship. Students must play in their proper section.

WHEN: Saturday, January 22, 2011. Schedule is as follows:
Check-in 8:00 am – 8:45 am Round 4 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
Round 1 9:00 am – 10:00 am Round 5 2:45 pm – 4:15 pm
Round 2 10:15 am – 11:15 pm Awards ASAP Following Last Round
Round 3 11:30 pm – 12:30 pm

WHO: Students K-12 who reside in Texas Region VII may participate. Each participant must have a valid USCF ID number and current paid membership. No exceptions.

TIME CONTROLS: Rounds 1-2-3 GAME/30, Rounds 4-5 GAME/45. Chess sets and boards will be provided. Bring your own chess clock!

TIE-BREAKERS: In the following order: modified median, solkoff, cumulative, cumulative of opposition. January Supplement will be used for all pairings. In, the event of a tie for any Scholarships a 5/min. Blitz playoff will be played winner takes the Scholarship

ENTRY FEE: $16 per player if postmarked by January 19, 2011. Late entries are $21 per player if, postmarked by January 20, 2011. $1 will be given to the Texas Chess Association(TCA)
Do not mail anything after January 19th as that is the absolute deadline.

REGISTRATION: Complete the official registration form and mail it along with payment. Onsite registration will have a 1st round ½ point bye assessed. Email registrations will be accepted but not official until payment is received.
