The Count of Monte Cristo
.I've blogged before about how I think the book stacks up to the movie, and while I stand by the statement that most people will get more out of the movie than the book, I still love this book.
I was blown away by Dumas' ability to write in a heartbreaking love story without either of the lovers ever touching each other.
The most heart-wrenching moment comes when Mercedes is letting Edmund know that she knows he is the Count, and he is in turn letting her know that he wanted her to know, but will not take her back. They never even say each other's names. They never touch. They never speak frankly, or directly, or openly, or any other way that we today would deem as being "honest." Yet the message, from both sides, comes out loud and clear.
That, my friends, is talent; talent deserving of the pedestal we've placed it on for nearly two hundred years.
