We all outgrow things, books are no exception.
If I still read today all the same books I read when I was thirteen or nine or five, I would be missing out on a world of wonder.
I haven't had time to outgrow any "grown up" books yet; I guess I just haven't been an adult long enough for anything I've grown to love as an adult to grow stale yet.
There are, however, lots of books that I've outgrown.
The Sweet Valley High series, including the Sweet Valley Twins, Sweet Valley Junior High, Sweet Valley Snoops, etc.- I read these feverishly as a pre-teen and young teen. Hundreds of them. Just looking at the blurbs now make me laugh and wonder what I ever saw in these books.
The Baby Sitters Club series- I am pretty sure any girl who grew up in the late eighties and early nineties thought the baby-sitters club was the greatest idea in the world. This series was full of "cool" stuff: call your friend and let the phone ring three times to let her know you're running late, hang a towel out your window and the color of the towel will let your friend know how you're getting to school so she'll know to wait for you, etc. I don't know why just talking was too hard... but, whatever. See how many famous young faces you can pick out from the film adaptation:
Nightmare Hall series- horror novels set on campus at some random college in the northeast. Here's the blurb for #17 in the series:
17: Last Breath- Michelle believes her German professor may be stealing students' souls in a bid for immortality.
Cool, huh?
EDIT: TIME Magazine totally agrees with me.
A blogging friend of mine posted a bookish meme, after reading it on another blogging friend's site. I can't not participate! This post was written in response to the 30 Days of Books.
