Day 21: Favorite Book From My Childhood

My mother used to read to me and my sisters every night as we fell asleep. I don't remember when it started, and I don't even remember when it ended, but I remember it nonetheless.

I don't remember the books I read sitting on a couch with my parents, and I don't remember the first book I ever read on my own (if the reports are to be believed, I was barely four when I started reading on my own, and indeed I remember reading the Sunday funnies on my own in kindergarten, at age four).

But I do remember the first book my mother read to us at night. The Hobbit, by JRR Tolkien.

My parents love to tell this little anecdote, and if you're one of my sisters or cousins, you've probably heard it at least a hundred thousand times, but most of you are not related to me by blood, and therefore have not heard it.

My mother read The Hobbit to me when I was very, very young. Young enough that when we rented the movie to watch as a family, I was curled on the floor holding my blanket. As soon as this image came on screen:

I shouted out, "THAT'S NOT WHAT A HOBBIT LOOKS LIKE!"

And my parents were so impressed that my little-child brain had concocted an image so vivid that I was actually disappointed by the abominable animation.

(I stand by that statement- that is NOT what a hobbit looks like, and I thank the heavens that Peter Jackson came along and gave us some real hobbits)

A blogging friend of mine posted a bookish meme, after reading it on another blogging friend's site. I can't not participate! This post was written in response to the 30 Days of Books.
