The biggest surprise ending, for me, came from a pretty unlikely source, considering second place was it's predecessor.
The second biggest twist- the one I didn't see coming but felt like it made perfect sense- came from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
If you haven't read it yet, I won't spoil it for you, but I will say this much: a typical locked-door mystery gets solved in a most, most unconventional way. And it is a satisfying end. Loose ends get tied up, relationships get mended (or destroyed as the case may be), reputations are restored and all is well in the we-all-hate-each-other way that Larsson developed.
The biggest twist ending came from the sequel, The Girl Who Played with Fire.
But not in a good way.
This one, the first big twist comes along and has you shaking your head in disbelief, certain that the actual end of the story will fix it all. It doesn't. I promise you- it does not fix anything. If a person gets beaten nearly to death and then shot in the back of the head, and then buried, they are dead. They do not crawl out of their own grave to find a blunt axe and avenge themselves. If they do, they are called zombies. Possibly vampires, depending on your version of supernatural-lore.
So there you have it- the best twist followed immediately by the worst twist. The first was good enough to propel me to the second book immediately, and the second was bad enough to make me not care whether the zombie-person lives or dies in the third book.
A blogging friend of mine posted a bookish meme, after reading it on another blogging friend's site. I can't not participate! This post was written in response to the 30 Days of Books.
