Day 6: A Book That Makes Me Sad

I don't know that a book can really make me sad... at least not for an extended period of time. "Crying" books usually make me wistful or hopeful or nostalgic; they bring tears to my eyes, but it's generally in a hopeful sort of way. I've never sunk into a depression because of a book.But, the blank pages of New Moon made me cry like I had just watched "Titanic" for the first time. Stephenie Meyer spent all of the first book, Twilight, building this ethereal love story, one that you just desperately wanted to believe in. You wanted to root for these characters, even though they were young. At the beginning of New Moon, the tone is such that you feel it just might all work out. Then it all goes to hell in a hand basket.

Edward leaving was abrupt and painful... like ripping off a band aid... except not. I know. You now think I am a child for saying that New Moon is the saddest book ever. But it is. The. Saddest. Ever. There's no message of hope, or redeeming human qualities, or life lessons to be learned. There's just pain and a void so big it actually consumes her life.
