But I won't.
As the Most Overrated Book: I am going to go with Stephen King's Gunslinger
This book came highly recommended from a lot of people.
"This is King's mangum opus!"
"The greatest work of the greatest author makes this the greatest book ever!"
"This will change how you see literature forever!"
"Greatest opening sentence in a novel, ever!"
In fact, a great deal of hubbub is made over that opening sentence:
"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."
Uh... OK.
I mean, it's not a bad sentence or anything. I don't see anything wrong with it. But greatest opening line ever? Better than the opening line of A Tale of Two Cities? Than the opener of Pride and Prejudice? In fact, there's a whole list of opening lines better than King's.
Alright. Let's move past that opening line. Once the story gets going, it's muddled and dull. King makes vague references to people and places that you don't understand or know anything about. It's not done in a mysterious way to make you want to know more... no, it's just a name plopped into the middle of the paragraph to make you feel like you've missed a conversation somewhere.
After reading this book, I was thoroughly underwhelmed. Luckily, in the edition I was reading, there was a letter written by King to his fans tacked onto the end of the novel. In this letter, he explained that he wrote this when he was nineteen and had no clear vision of where the story was going or where it was coming from. He didn't know who "Susan" was, he didn't know what the ultimate goal of the protagonist was, and he didn't really know the mechanics of the world he had set up. He had just put pen to paper and come up with this little story.
I think he meant for this letter to be a means of bragging about his abilities; "Oh, this old thing? I didn't even try! ::smarmy laughter::" but instead, it brought on lightbulbs for me. "OH! That really had no meaning, the thing I didn't understand? There's no reason for it!"
In fact, so muddled and incomplete was this novel, that upon completing the entire series, King realized that The Gunslinger was, essentially, a piece of crap that virtually ruined the rest of his series. So he re-released it with over nine thousand words (thirty five pages) added, and multiple characters changes and other major edits.
If you have to make thirty five pages worth of clarification to your story after realizing that it's messed up six other books, and you don't realize it until twenty five years after it's release... there's something wrong.
And I rest my case.
A blogging friend of mine posted a bookish meme, after reading it on another blogging friend's site. I can't not participate! This post was written in response to the 30 Days of Books.
