It doesn't exist.
The worst rated books on Goodreads in my "already read" list rate well under 3.5 stars (out of five), and my rating is always lower than the average rating for those sucky-suck books at the bottom of the list.
Here, as a warning to you, my good friends, are the worst rated books on my Goodreads list:
#7- The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult (3.32 stars average: 2 stars from me)
I've been told this is an unfortunate book to have chosen as my first (only) Picoult read. It doesn't matter. This wasn't her first book, and it isn't her most hated work. She knew what she was doing by now, she had a honed team of editors in her corner, and she's put out much worse than this (according to her fans, anyway). There is no reason for the heavy-handed metaphors, the ridiculous comic book images or the overly-zealous attempt at creating intrigue where there wasn't any.
#6- Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason by Helen Fielding (3.29 stars average: 2 stars from me)
The first book is hilarious. The second is lame. Less funny, less relatable, less interesting. The changes made to the second film make it a better movie. Since this story was originally based on Pride and Prejudice, it would stand to reason that Bridget ought to be all "Happily Ever After" with Mark Darcy, but, alas, no. Hey, did you know that in the serial column that inspired the books, Bridget ends up having Daniel's child after he runs off and leaves her single? Somehow, it's fitting. Pathetic. But fitting.
#5- The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne (3.27 stars average: 3 stars from me)
I'll admit that I'm basing my rating off a reading in high school, but I remember liking the book just fine. Maybe I'm wrong... maybe my friend M can correct me?
#4- Everyone Worth Knowing by Lauren Weisberger (3.23 stars average: 2 stars from me)
Shallow, pretentious bullsh** female literature. You can read my review if you're interested, but I'm sick of even talking about Lauren Weisberger. She doesn't deserve the career that The Devil Wears Prada earned her.
#3- Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson (3.12 stars average: 3 stars from me)
There was a time in my young single adults ward that EVERYBODY thought this book was magical. "I NEED TO ADAPT TO CHANGES IN MY LIFE!!!!!" Um. Yes. Yes you do. But stop crying about it, you look like a ninny.
#2- Chasing Harry Winston by Lauren Weisberger (3.02 stars average: 1 star from me)
Not only is this the SECOND book by Weisberger to make this very short list, but Entertainment Weekly magazine called this book the worst book of the year in 2008.
And, the worst rated book on my Goodreads list:
#1- The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler (2.74 stars average: 1 star from me)
This was a hapless mess. Fowler apparently couldn't come up with enough storyline to create a romance novel, so she spun together five romance stories into one book, binding these characters together by their book club. She then still didn't have enough for a book, so she patterned each romance after one of Austen's already-fully-written novels. Lazy. Lazy. Lazy. And opportunistic; she knew women would buy this book just because it had "Jane Austen" in the title. It was even made into a crappy movie- which just goes to show, Hollywood will remake anything.
