Kramnik saved by the clock!

A Chessbase report of what happened in the Kramnik - Radjabov playoff

While this last game (Aronian vs. Grischuk) was taking place, Kramnik and Radjabov were already into their blitz tiebreaks. The reason is that they started their rapid games one game before Aronian and Grischuk. In other words, Aronian and Grischuk started their first game at the same time Kramnik and Radjabov started their second. Unfortunately, the significant dullness of the first four classic games, continued into the rapids, and a further lot of draws were presented to the spectators. The blitz games were another story though.

The structure of the blitz games was a mini-match of two games played at five minutes with a three second increment per move. Each match is potentially decisive, and up to five such matches could be played to decide a winner. In the first game, Kramnik went down in flames badly, and resigned one move before being mated. This essentially meant that he had an absolute must-win situation if he wanted to stay in the match. Things didn’t seem to be going his way as the position seemed headed for a draw. The pieces went off, no weaknesses appeared, and it went down to a rook and opposite-colored bishop ending where all considered the match a done deal. Kramnik understandably meant to play to the very end, and with fifteen seconds left each (remember they received a three second increment per move though), this is what happened:

It took a good thirteen minutes for the game to resume, during which the players strolled about waiting – with ample time to study the position (one would think). When the game continued, Radjabov quickly collapsed with a series of decisive mistakes and lost. This meant a second blitz mini-match, and this time Kramnik won the first, while in the second Radjabov was caught in a perpetual, which ended the match. The two players shook hands and proceeded to the press conference.

Kamsky eliminates Shankland, others to head to playoff

Kamsky won the 2nd of a two game match to end the Cinderella run of Shankland. In the other semifinal, Hess and Shulman battled to a draw again. They will head into a playoff tomorrow.

On the women's side, Krush and Abrahamyan both won to even up the match 1-1. They will also have to play tomorrow to see who will advance.

Here is the tiebreak rule:

Tiebreaks

Semifinals and finals tiebreaks will consist of a two-game rapid match (G/25+5 second increment). If the contest is still undecided, the match will go to a rapid Armageddon bidding game with a base time of 45 minutes for each Player. Black will have draw odds. Each Player shall bid an amount of time (minutes and seconds, a number equal to or less than 45:00) they are willing to play with in order to choose their color. The Player who bids the lowest amount of time chooses his color and begins with that amount of time; the other Player receives 45:00. If both Players bid exactly the same amount of time, the Chief Arbiter will flip a coin to determine who shall choose their color.

A stunner in the US qualifier playoffs

Artwork by Mike Magnan

Anna Zatonskih defeated Sabina Foisor in the final round to get to the playoff. In the playoff, she once again defeated Foisor again (twice) to earn a spot in the final.

In the men's playoff, the biggest shock occurred when GM-elect Shankland defeated Onischuk 1.5 - 0.5 in the playoff to move on. In the last 2 days, Onischuk drew Shankland twice with white and lost once with black. This in itself is quite an accomplishment.

Onischuk 1/2 0
Shakland 1/2 1

Zatonskih 1 1
Foisor 0 0

Koneru, Hou and Zhao are the 3 Semi-Finalists

Koneru, Hou and Zhao are the 3 Semi-Finalists

After the second game 3 participants of semi-final matches were determined. Hou Yifan and Humpy Koneru will meet at the board in semi-final as it happened in Nalchik in 2008. Both of them confidently drew their games today and thus won their matches against Katerina Lahno and Ju Wenjun accordingly.

Almira Skripchenko was eliminated today by Zhao Xue. The French player simply blundered a piece in a good position. She was playing for 11 days without any pause and won three previous matches on tie-breaks. Her opponent Chinese Zhao Xue will meet with the winner of the match Harika – Ruan which will be determined on tie-breaks tomorrow.

The classic part of Indian-Chinese encounter ended with two draws. Both participants proved to be good rapid players and it`s not easy to give prognoses.
